Pūhoro STEM Academy

First launched in 2016, the Pūhoro STEM Academy a transformative programme aimed at advancing Māori leadership and capability in STEM fields. Backed by the Tindall Foundation, the programme works with secondary school students and their whānau around Aotearoa New Zealand and provides them with culturally appropriate mentoring, tutoring and field trips designed to help them navigate pathways into STEM careers.

With its focus on kaupapa Māori, Pūhoro helps participants develop their Māori worldviews as well as their technical skills and capability. The programme also utilises a tuakana-teina model to help participants succeed as Māori.

Since its start, Pūhoro has helped more than 800 tauira complete NCEA in STEM subjects. More than two thirds of the tauira went on to undertake tertiary study.
