YEA Monthly Newsletter October 2023

Kia ora!

I’m looking forward to working for a systems change organisation that makes a real difference to those on the frontline supporting our rangatahi to thrive in Aotearoa.

We are facing an uncertain future with the election this month likely to see significant changes regardless of the outcome. One issue that is top of my mind is how our sector is funded. We recently sent an OIA to the Ministry of Social Development requesting information on tools used by the Ministry to determine the rate of funding per employment outcome, what payments per outcome have been awarded to contracted parties, as well as any reports that highlight the long-term benefits of youth employment placements. We look forward to sharing the response in our next newsletter.

I’m also interested in the discourse on ‘school drop out’ crisis and what difference employability training in schools could make. You can read a recent article YEA pitched to media about the crisis in our ‘what’s happening in our sector’ section below. My third key interest is in how our businesses can support good youth employment. For more on this topic, have a look at our Symposium wrap up that follows.

I’m really keen to hear from you. What do you see as the priorities for systems change in the youth employability sector?

The Stewardship Group will meet post-election to strategize, so please email me or call me on 021 056 0759 to discuss. I’d love to hear from you!

Ngā manaakitanga
